🫘🥓 Boston Baked Beans 😍
A classic, hearty comfort-food side dish with tender navy beans, smoky bacon, sweet molasses, and a rich, flavorful sauce. Perfect for family dinners, summer cookouts, BBQs, or holiday gatherings!

🫘 Ingredients

  • 1 lb (450 g) dried navy beans
  • ½ lb (225 g) bacon, chopped
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ¼ cup molasses
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp yellow mustard
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 bay leaf

✨ Optional additions for extra flavor:

  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1–2 tbsp maple syrup for extra sweetness

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1. Soak the beans
Rinse the dried navy beans thoroughly and remove any damaged beans or debris. Place them in a large bowl, cover generously with water, and soak overnight. Drain the beans the next day.

2. Partially cook the beans
Transfer the drained beans to a large pot and cover with fresh water. Bring to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 45–60 minutes, or until the beans are beginning to soften but are not completely tender. Drain and set aside.

3. Cook the bacon and onion
Preheat your oven to 325°F (165°C). In a large skillet, cook the chopped bacon over medium heat until lightly browned. Add the chopped onion and cook for 3–4 minutes, until softened and fragrant.

4. Make the baked bean mixture
Place the partially cooked beans in a large baking dish. Add the bacon and onion mixture, brown sugar, molasses, ketchup, mustard, salt, black pepper, and any optional seasonings you’d like to use. Pour in the water and add the bay leaf. Stir everything together until well combined.

5. Bake slowly
Cover the baking dish tightly with foil or a lid and bake for 2½–3 hours. Stir occasionally and check the beans during cooking. If they become too dry, add a little hot water.

6. Finish uncovered
Remove the cover during the final 30 minutes of baking. Continue cooking until the beans are completely tender and the sauce has become thick, glossy, and rich.

7. Serve and enjoy!
Remove the bay leaf and give the beans a final stir. Let them rest for about 10 minutes before serving so the sauce can thicken slightly.

💡 Tips for the Best Boston Baked Beans

  • Don’t skip the soaking step—it helps the beans cook more evenly.
  • For deeper smoky flavor, use smoked bacon.
  • Prefer sweeter beans? Add a little extra brown sugar or maple syrup.
  • For a tangier flavor, add a splash of apple cider vinegar near the end.
  • These beans taste even better the next day after the flavors have had time to develop!
