Ingredients

For the Hamburger Steaks

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

For the Smothered Onion Gravy

  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

For the Mashed Potatoes

  • 2 lbs (900 g) potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the Green Beans

  • 12 oz (340 g) fresh or frozen green beans
  • 2 slices bacon, chopped (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Begin by preparing the mashed potatoes. Place the peeled and cubed potatoes into a large pot of salted water. Bring to a boil and cook for about 15–20 minutes, or until fork-tender. Drain well and mash with butter and milk. Season with salt and pepper, then keep warm.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, garlic powder, onion powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined. Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape into oval patties.
  3. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the hamburger steaks for about 4–5 minutes per side until nicely browned. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, melt the butter and add the sliced onions. Cook slowly, stirring often, for 12–15 minutes until the onions become soft, golden brown, and caramelized.
  5. Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir continuously for 1 minute. Gradually pour in the beef broth while whisking to prevent lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce and thyme. Simmer for 3–4 minutes until the gravy thickens.
  6. Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet. Spoon the onion gravy over the top, reduce the heat to low, cover, and cook for another 10–12 minutes until the patties are fully cooked and tender.
  7. Meanwhile, cook the green beans. If using bacon, sauté it in a small pan until crispy. Add butter and green beans, then cook for 5–7 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
  8. To serve, place a generous scoop of mashed potatoes on each plate. Add a hamburger steak and cover it with the rich smothered onion gravy. Serve alongside the green beans.
